Frequently asked questions
September to March, when skies are dark enough. Peak activity is around equinoxes (September and March). You need clear skies and an active aurora — check the Icelandic Met Office aurora forecast (vedur.is). Getting away from Reykjavík's light pollution significantly increases your chances.
For the Ring Road (Route 1) and south coast, a normal car suffices. For F-roads (Highland routes), a 4WD with high clearance is mandatory and legally required. River crossings on F-roads require proper 4WD technique — research carefully before attempting.
The experience is luxurious and genuinely Icelandic (geothermal water, silica mud, surrounded by lava), but very expensive and must be booked months in advance. Alternatives: Sky Lagoon (Reykjavík), Mývatn Nature Baths (northern Iceland), or local village pools are cheaper and less crowded.
Atlantic puffins breed in Iceland from mid-April to mid-August. The largest colony is at Látrabjarg cliffs in the Westfjords. Puffins also nest near Reykjavík (Grótta) and on the Vestmannaeyjar islands.
